About Us
Ungil Mood Marketplace is the heart of Melekeok — a living space where culture, farming, and community come together. Our name carries the spirit of generosity and abundance, reminding us that the best things in life are grown, shared, and celebrated together.
We are a group of women, men, and youth from Melekeok who believe that farming and market work are not just businesses — they are part of our heritage. From our ancestors who planted taro and wove baskets to the new generation rebuilding the market, we continue the same values of hard work, sharing, and unity.
One of the greatest inspirations for the revival of Ungil Mood is Diradelbochel Tecla Kodep, one of the eldest market vendors in Melekeok. When I first decided to help rebuild the marketplace, I was referred to her — a woman of great wisdom, strong reputation, and deep dedication to her people. I hold her in the highest respect. Her passion and achievements inspired me to carry on her dream — to keep the market alive and to help farmers, families, and those in Melekeok with little or no income build their dreams and create a sustainable future.
We are now developing a master plan to improve the marketplace — which includes building new market stalls, introducing community services, and creating cultural programs that will support farmers, preserve our traditions, and strengthen Melekeok’s economy. These upcoming improvements will transform Ungil Mood into a vibrant public space where people can sell, gather, and celebrate Palauan culture together.
After more than 30 years, we are proud to begin restoring the old Ungil Mood Market — step by step, with the guidance of our elders and the energy of our younger generation. Our mission is to make Ungil Mood a public marketplace for the entire island, where everyone can come to sell, learn, and grow.
Ungil Mood Marketplace — built by the people of Melekeok, for the people of Palau.
Where tradition meets tomorrow.
